Yoga and Health: part 1 of 4

Yoga & Health Talk

Workshop Series by Ai Kubo, PhD- Health Coach,

Epidemiologist & Yoga Teacher

Series 1: Energy (Oct)

Series 2: Weight (Jan)

Series 3: Sleep (Mar)

Series 4: Stress (May)

Series 1: Energy

Tired all the time? 5 simple tips to boost your energy all day, naturally. Some of the complaints I hear the most from my clients are:

“I am always feeling tired!”

“I feel heavy!”

“I am stressed!”

“I can’t sleep.”

If that sounds familiar, you are not alone!

As we age, many of us naturally experience ever-slowing metabolism and lower energy, while life seems to get more overwhelming. Our hormones start to change and our bodies don’t function the way they used to before. When you have a job and and/or kids to take care of, you want to have as much energy as possible to be the best version of yourself and to be a good role model for your colleagues and children – so it can be frustrating when your body doesn't seem to want to cooperate.

In this first workshop of 4-part series, the topic is “Energy.” I will first guide you through a 60-minute alignment-based vinyasa class that is designed to help you feel more energized yet grounded. Then we will have an interactive session where we will discuss how we modern people tend to get stuck in a vicious cycle of lifestyle that is not aligned with our health visions – and how you can begin to realign your lifestyle with your goals. You will also get to take home an eBook that describes 5 easy steps to boost your natural energy, so you can incorporate these tips in your lifestyle immediately!

The art of thai massage

Take this valuable opportunity to develop your sensitivity and awareness through touch with seasoned bodywork practitioners and yoga teachers Alok and Anjuli. Come with a partner, good friend, or join us solo to deepen your inmate capacity to give and receive a healing massage sequence.

Anjuli & Alok have been teaching together for 11 years and have studied with master teachers in the healing arts around the world. Their teaching blends Thai Massage, Zen Shiatsu, Acupressure, and Myofascial Release techniques and theory. Rooted in the principles of Thai Medicine and Buddhist spirituality, the practice is framed by respect for all beings, balanced action, and loving-kindness. Attention to the Chinese Meridians and specific acupressure points will be included.

Through joint mobilization, mindful passive stretching, acupressure, and emphasis on the breath, you will learn valuable therapeutic techniques. With proper body mechanics, the practice truly becomes an effortless dance between giver and receiver. As yogis themselves, your teachers will emphasize how to cultivate fluidity and ease while giving.

We will be sharing fundamental skills to help release tension and learn how to give a nourishing full body massage. This training is great for anyone interested in refining their sense of touch and no experience is needed.

*Folks with more privilege (white, cis, straight) are invited to give more to support scholarships for those impacted by state violence: Immigrants, Queer and Trans folks, and Black, Indigenous and People of color (BIPOC) folks.

Working with gravity

Working with gravity

This workshop is designed to teach and practice the flexibility principles that accompany passive stretching by allowing breath, relaxation, and gravity to enhance our flexibility practice. We will focus on enhancing flexibility through the upper and lower back, hips, and legs through a series of postures and stretches that will be held in a yin-like class structure.

Targeting relearning flexibility from a place of active relaxation. This workshop will focus on drawing on the breath to help deepen flexibility while also learning what flexibility means for you. Most people when originally taught flexibility are taught an active form of stretching that pushes and pulls to enhance the flexibility of the body. My intention with this course is to move the nervous system from sympathetic to parasympathetic to help indicate to the body and mind that you are safe and capable of relaxing to allow gravity to draw your body deeper into postures. By cultivating a parasympathetic nervous system response through our breath, our body slowly releases tensions that help it feel safe and eventually draws closer to our flexibility goals. As we sink deeper into our flexibility and release any tension we are holding in specific areas of our body, the releases may be accompanied by emotional and spiritual releases. Thereby clearing space and allowing us to invite new intentions for our bodies and our lives.

Yoga nidra (Copy)

In this nourishing 1-hour practice, we will prepare the body for rest with simple movement exercises and breathwork, and then rest into a 45-minute yoga nidra practice.

Yoga Nidra or “yogic sleep” is a guided meditation designed to lead students into a deep state of relaxation. Students are encouraged to rest comfortably on their backs, taking a posture similar to savasana. Kari then guides students through incremental stages of body and sensation awareness, a visualization practice and provides a grounding return for ease of awakening.

This is a perfect Friday night practice to de-stress from your week. No previous yoga experience is needed. Everyone is welcome.
